Nacido en 1939 en el seno de familia de inmigrantes judíos en Estados Unidos. Doctor por la Universidad de Harvard y Master por la Universidad de Chicago en 1962 y Presidente del Consejo Asesor para el gobierno de EE.UU en temas de Bioética de 2002 a 2005. Fue profesor en St. John’s College y actualmente es profesor en la Universidad de Chicago. Conocido por su esfuerzo para frenar la investigación con células madre embrionarias. Autor de numerosos ensayos y artículos sobre temas de ética en los que ha profundizado en los fundamentos teóricos. Al servicio de esta tarea ha puesto una brillante erudición y un agudo talento de crítico literario, características que hacen su obra especialmente atractiva.
